12 Southeastern Virginia Jewish News April 10, 1998 Sunday, April 19,1998 Contemporary Arts Center of Virginia "t%i*/ "The Long Way Home," winner of the 1998 :w i:c: Academy Award for Best Documentary, will be featured Sunday, April 19, 1998, when the JCCT and the Contemporary Arts Center of Virginia come together for the first programming event for Israel at 50. Ruth Gruber, featured in "The Long Way Home" and famed foreign correspondent, will speak of her experiences on the ship Exodus and her rescue missions taking Holocaust survivors from Nazi-infested waters to safety in Lake Oswego, N.Y. during the late 1940% The movie deals with events following the liberation of the death camps, showing how Holocaust survivors went from the death camps into detention camps that were scarcely more pleasant. The world, for the most part, ignored these people and their plight. As a result, their determination to find a land to call their own was fueled by these events, and this determination culminated in the establishment of the State of Israel - a homeland to call their own. The Contemporary Arts Center of Virginia is featuring three artists' interpretations of this period in an exhibit from Denmark. Joe Nicastri, Christian Boltanski and Shimon Attie will display their work, as well as a 40-piece photography exhibit from Denmark. Mr. Nicastri will be present to discuss his approach to the subject matter and answer questions. The schedule of events is: 1:00 - 2:00 pm ..............
