WASHINGTON (JTA)-President Carter has appointed Rabbi Abraham Shemtov of Philadelphia to a 20-member intergovernmental advi- sory council on education. The White House said that the council, estab- lished by the Department of Educa- tion Organization Act, will be re- onsible for advising the President, e Secretary of Education and Con- gress on intergovernmental policies and relations in education. Shemtov Is regional director of the American Friends of Lubavitch which includes Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey He has held this office since 1961.-ireviously he was director of Gun Israel, a summer educational Project which now claims a world tetwork of about 70 camps serving SOme 30,000 children. He was born in Vilna. and came to the U.S. in 1953. Among the members of the council are Henry Steele Commager, the not- historian; Mayor Richard Hatcher of Gary, Ind.; and Wenda Moore, head of the University of Minnesota board of regents. Golden Jubilee Donor Mrs Bernice Tannenbaum, National president of Hadassah, will be the guest speaker at the Golden Jubilee Donor Nov. 18 at Temple Israel. Mrs. Tannenbaum is completing her four years as national president and in that position has been involved in all top levels of Jewish life here in the United States and in Israel. She is a member of the Jewish Agency as well as the World Zionist Organization. The donor will pay tribute to all women who have been Hadassah members for 50 years or more. Mrs. Tannenbaum will also be guest of honor at the Hadassah Medical Organization's "big gifts" affair on the evening of Monday, Nov. 17. Conference delegates, drawn from every region of the country, represented the 123 chapters and more than 60,000 members of the organization, which has contributed more than $17 million in support of the Brandeis libraries. The group, founded at the same time as the University, in 1948, is the world's largest "friends of a library" movement in the world. The conference offered a wide variety of activities, from plenary sessions and workshops to campus tours. Speakers included Brandeis President Brandeis faculty members conducted special seminars on "The Presidency: Past and Future; .... Draft: Register or Protest?"; and "Being Jewish in the 80's." The conference also featured a break- fast at Brandeis' Rose Art Museum for delegates and faculty guests, chaired by Lois Foster, a Fellow of the University, head of the Patrons and Friends of the museum, and wife of university Trustee Chairman Dr. Henry L. Foster. The concluding event on Sunday, June 8 was a tour by conference participants of _the recently opened Joh, F. Kennedy Memorial Library in Boston's Dorchester section.
