Tidewater Celebrates I00rael at 50
The Pilot joins Israel at 50 sponsors

Israel at 50 Coordinator
The Virginian Pilot has joined
NationsBank and other corpora-
tions as sponsors of Tidewater's
Israel at 50 events. Among the
events is the interactive "Walk
Through Jerusalem" children's
exhibit which will be held at the
Jewish Community Center of
Tidewater. The Pilot is also the
sponsor of the Israel at 50 special
supplement which will be fea-
tured in the April 24 issue of the
Southeastern Virginia Jewish
News.
"We are very pleased to recog-
nize The Virginian-Pilot as a
sponsor of Israel at 50. Without

Ruth Gruber to share experiences as journalist
shown in conjunction with Gruber's address. Gru-
ber is featured in the film, and as a journalist, she
covered the voyage of "The Exodus," as well as
being involved in the rescue of thousands of sur-
vivors from Nazi infested waters to safe haven in
Oswego, NY.
Cheryl Sloane, Chairperson of the event, said,
"It is quite a coup to be able to offer a captivating
speaker like Ruth Gruber and have a film that is
not only a Virginia premiere, but a recent Academy
Award winner. It will give the community an
opportunity to participate in an Israel at 50 event at

Hampton Roads to speak about
her experiences as a journalist
covering the Holocaust sur-
vivors' attempts to flee the
detention camps and get to a
land they call their own.
On Sunday, April 19, at the Contemporary Art
Center of Virginia, Gruber will participate in an
Israel at 50 program. The Academy Award win-
ning documentary, "The Long Way Home" will be

Israeli performer Ron Eliran
will bring Hampton Roads audi-
ences to their feet on Sunday,
April 26 with his renditions of
Hebrew, English and Yiddish
songs.
A favorite in Norfolk, Eliran
and his accompanists will
delight both young and old with
his renditions as part of the
Israel at 50 Independence Day
Celebration in Town Point Park.
Eliran's performance is being
sponsored by Brith Sholom
Lodge. Lodge president Dave
Lennis said, "We are delighted
to bring Ron Eliran to town. He
brings the spirit of Israel in his
music, and his enthusiasm will
have people singing and dancing
in the park."
In addition to Ron Eliran, The
Young People's Klezmer Work-
shop (Oy Vey Klezmer), led by
Sruli Dresdner and Lisa Mayer,
will play and sing Klezmer
music for the young and the
young at heart. This segment is
the culmination of the "Whole
Mishpuchah" program that has
brought parents and their chil-
dren together throughout the past
year to enrich their Judaic expe-
rience as a family.
